The Power of Peers; finding other people with diabetes
Living with diabetes can make you feel like you are all alone, but there are approximately 300,000 people with diabetes in Ireland, and approximately 30,000 of those are people with type 1 diabetes. You are not alone!
I remember what it was like to feel like I was the only person I knew with type 1 diabetes: it was awful and it was lonely. We started a group in 2007 where people with diabetes could meet each other and learn about local diabetes services, and I have not looked back since. Today, we are a group of people with diabetes of all types and ages, who engage in lively discussions and know that our most important resource is ourselves. We exchange information about where to find the health services we need and where to find the best advice. Sharing our stories and exchanging information inspires and motivates us to live well with diabetes.
We meet five times a year in Ennis, Co. Clare. If you are interested in joining us, please email me at grainne@Thriveabetes.ie
There are a number of diabetes support groups in Ireland. Find out if there is one near you here.
