Driving with Diabetes

Driving with diabetes involves active self-management to reduce the risk of hypoglycaemia. This includes checking blood glucose before and during journeys, carrying fast-acting treatment such as glucose or snacks, and stopping immediately if warning symptoms occur.

Drivers must notify the relevant licensing authority and their insurer, if using insulin or medications that increase hypo risk, to support safe driving and meet legal requirements, as low blood glucose can seriously affect driving ability.

The Road Safety Authority RSA provides more information on the Medical fitness rules, your responsibilities, and when you need to submit a medical or eyesight report form here

Glucose Monitoring Devices

There are two methods of monitoring blood glucose levels:

  • The finger stick method using blood glucose meters, as seen in the photo on the bottom left,

  • And continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) using sensors attached to your body, as seen in the image on the bottom right.

This link to the Thriveabetes webpage goes into more details about how these methods work and what devices are available for FREE in Ireland.
